Monterey Veterans Collaborative Meeting

posted Aug 19, 2010 10:37 PM by USIAV Organization   [ updated Aug 19, 2010 10:51 PM ]

The Monterey Veterans Collaborative Meeting went very well today. We had a panel of veterans to assist the collaborative in a Q&A session.  The panel provided information from the veteran's point of view.  We listened to their stories of hardship which gave the collaborative insights on how they can improve their programs and/or make it easier to reach the veterans.  Also, USIAV is working to establish a Drop-In Veterans Center, a brick and mortar location for all veterans seeking information in all areas of interest to include but not limited to, education benefits, medical benefits, mental health services, disability claims, and much more.  The center would also include a student lounge, equipped with computers and free wifi for the many student veterans in our area.

“Self care is never a selfish act. It is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have,
the gift I was put on earth to offer to others. Anytime we can listen to true self, and give it the care it requires, we do so not only for ourselves, but for the many others whose lives we touch.” Parker Palmer

Therapy through horsemanship / Horses for Heroes

posted Jul 19, 2010 9:29 PM by USIAV Organization   [ updated Jul 19, 2010 9:54 PM ]

No cost to participating veterans. This program has been fully funded by the San Martin Lions Club. Transportation will be provided by the Santa Cruz County Veterans Center.

Working with horses provides a wonderful opportunity to engage in therapeutic activities outside of a traditional therapeutic environment. Reaching for a ball while seated on a calm horse can help make physical activity fun for a disabled child.  Learning to halter a horse in an open pasture can make an urban teen who has issues listening to authority figures pay attention.  Seeing how a horse responds to body movements and tone of voice can help reinforce the power of calm, assertive behavior over a tendency toward aggressive or anxious engagements. And of course it opens the heart when a person of any age or ability begins to feel the mutual respect that occurs when a horse and person come to know and trust and communicate with each other, whether in the saddle or on the ground.
